California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a warning to President Joe Biden on Sunday regarding the campaign of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to be included on the ballot for this year’s election.
Former President Donald Trump and Biden secured the nominations of the Republican and Democratic parties, respectively. Both candidates emerged victorious in the majority of state primary contests as they pursue a second term in this year’s election. However, it seems that a 2020 rematch between the two is not a popular choice among voters. Many individuals, when polled, express their belief that neither candidate should be seeking another term, citing various reasons. In hypothetical general election match-ups, Trump and Biden are typically shown to be in a close race, with no clear frontrunner.
John F. Kennedy Jr., who originally intended to run as a Democrat but is now running as an independent candidate, is actively working towards securing a spot on the ballot in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. for the upcoming general election in November.
On Thursday, state officials confirmed that Kennedy Jr. has successfully secured a spot on the ballot in the battleground state of Michigan. This development makes Michigan the second state, after Utah, to officially include his name for voters to consider. The approval from Michigan is a significant milestone for Kennedy Jr.’s campaign, as it plays a pivotal role in determining his chances of success.
During an interview on Sunday, Governor Newsom and Jen Psaki discussed Robert Kennedy Jr.’s position on the Michigan ballot on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki”.
Psaki asked the Democratic governor about their concerns regarding the potential impact of RFK Jr. on President Biden’s reelection chances.
“We hold the Kennedy name in high regard, and I personally have great admiration for the Kennedys. This is not just a matter of sentiment, but a fact that is supported by various polls. However, beyond the numbers, it is important to use common sense and acknowledge the reality. Bobby Kennedy Jr., if he manages to secure a spot on the ballot in more than just the crucial swing state of Michigan, and expands his presence to other states, we must approach this situation with utmost seriousness,” cautioned Governor Newsom.
In addition, Newsom highlighted the significance of seven crucial swing states for Biden’s campaign and provided insights into his chances of success in those states.
“Now we have seven potential states in play: Georgia and North Carolina, which we know are going to be a little more challenging than in the past. However, we are making a great case for ourselves. Pennsylvania has received special attention from the president, and we believe we have a great shot there. Additionally, we are putting all our time, energy, and focus into Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona,” stated Newsom.
Newsweek has sent emails to both Biden’s campaign and Kennedy Jr.’s campaign, requesting comments on the matter.
Throughout the past year, Newsom has consistently dismissed rumors surrounding his potential presidential run in 2024. Instead, he has emphasized his commitment to supporting President Biden’s reelection campaign. Demonstrating his dedication, the governor embarked on a three-day campaign tour in South Carolina and Nevada earlier this year to rally support for the president.
Third-party and independent candidates have always faced challenges within a political system that predominantly revolves around two major parties. Kennedy Jr. has been vocal about encouraging Americans to step out of their comfort zones and take a chance by voting for him.
Newsom is cautioning against the potential impact of Kennedy Jr. on the upcoming November election. Democrats have expressed concerns that Kennedy Jr. may divert votes away from Biden, but it remains uncertain whether he would pose a greater threat to Biden or Trump’s chances of winning, according to polls.
Polls indicate that both Biden and Trump are not well-liked by the public. Interestingly, Kennedy is seen as the independent or third-party candidate who enjoys the most support. However, his positions on controversial topics like vaccinations and abortion might pose a challenge in connecting with Democratic voters who are dissatisfied with Biden.
According to Grant Davis Reeher, a political science professor at Syracuse University, Kennedy Jr.’s presence on the ballot could be a cause for concern for Biden. Reeher emphasized the significance of Kennedy Jr.’s economic policies and family background, stating that they have the potential to attract Democratic voters.
According to Reeher, if the election is close, as anticipated, any third-party candidate who gains even a small amount of support becomes a cause for concern.
Multiple polls released in March revealed encouraging numbers for Biden, indicating leads or ties in crucial battleground states such as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. These polls indicate that Biden has a slight advantage on a national level, ranging from one to three points. However, it remains uncertain whether this advantage would translate into an overall victory, considering the influence of the Electoral College.
