A massive ice cliff doesn’t deter a baby emperor penguin from diving into the water.
In January, hundreds of chicks demonstrated remarkable courage as they fearlessly plunged off an Antarctic cliff. Their bravery in the face of adversity was truly unparalleled.
The penguin chicks in the video below jumped with a mix of confidence and hesitation, creating a truly remarkable sight, according to Gregory.

Emperor penguin chicks often embark on a remarkable journey towards the ocean at a tender age, even as young as 6 months old. National Geographic reports that these courageous chicks take their inaugural plunge into the icy waters, leaping a mere 2 feet from the safety of the ice.
People have dared to jump from even greater heights, deliberately aiming for “sheer ice cliffs” in their quest to be the first to make the leap. Since 2009, satellites have captured these thrilling jumps, but what unfolds afterwards has remained a secret until recently.
As Gregory watches in awe, a group of adorable little chicks gingerly traverse the edge of the massive ice cliff. They move in unison, their tiny feet taking them closer to the precipice. Intrigued, Gregory can’t help but voice his curiosity, pondering aloud, “What in the world is happening here? Where could these charming chicks be headed?”
They come to a halt just before reaching the precipice.
Gregory is amazed at the height of the cliff, estimating it to be around 40-50 feet. He points out that he has only witnessed emperors jumping off sea ice, which is a much shorter distance of just a couple of feet at most. He expresses his disbelief, questioning whether the penguins are actually considering leaping from such a great height.
One lone chick … one giant leap
A brave little chick tentatively approaches the edge, making a small adjustment before taking a courageous leap into the frigid water. Its entry creates a big splash, but the chick quickly adapts and starts swimming effortlessly.
“I can’t believe it. He actually did it,” exclaims Gregory.
The other chicks see the successful dive as a signal to proceed, and they start jumping into the water at regular intervals.
According to Gregory, it is evident that these chicks have developed a strong bond and tend to stay close to one another. He predicts that soon, some of them will begin to take the leap and jump off. The initial courageous jumpers will serve as inspiration for the rest of the group, giving them the confidence to follow suit. In fact, Gregory has noticed that a few of them have already started attempting to flap their wings in preparation.
