In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) proudly shared that Texas has successfully transported over 100,000 immigrants from the border to various “sanctuary cities” across the country. This includes popular destinations such as New York City and Chicago.
The office of the three-term Republican governor announced on Friday that they have achieved the feat of providing state-funded transportation for immigrants to travel north. They also made it clear that they have no plans to stop this service any time soon.
“In a recent post on X, Governor Abbott made it clear that Texas will continue to hold the line until President Biden takes action to secure the border. Abbott emphasized the importance of addressing the issue and urged the administration to take responsibility for the situation.”
Since April 2022, around 105,000 immigrants have boarded buses from different locations along the Texas border after being released from federal Border Patrol custody following their illegal entry into the country.
Over 39,600 immigrants have made the decision to journey to New York City, while another 32,500 have opted for buses to Chicago. These two cities have served as popular destinations for bus travel since mid-2022.
In recent months, Denver has emerged as a popular destination for immigrants opting to travel via Texas buses. Since May alone, over 16,900 immigrants have made their way to Colorado.
Since April 2022, an additional 12,500 immigrants have chosen Washington, D.C. as their first destination as part of the governor’s initiative.
Around 3,500 individuals have traveled to Philadelphia, while approximately 1,500 have made their way to Los Angeles.
During a press conference in April 2022, Governor Abbott announced that Texas would be offering charter buses to assist local officials in handling the influx of illegal immigrants being left by the Biden administration. The aim is to transport these individuals to Washington, D.C. and alleviate the strain on overwhelmed communities.
“We are sending them to the United States’ capital,” said Abbott, emphasizing the relocation of migrants. According to him, this decision would enable the Biden administration to promptly respond to the requirements of the individuals allowed into the country through the border.
City officials in “sanctuary” cities, which are areas that refuse to hand over illegal immigrants arrested for regular crimes to federal immigration officials, have faced the consequences of Abbott’s action.
Cities like New York are discouraging immigrants from coming their way by stating that they lack the necessary funds and housing to accommodate individuals while they wait for their immigration court hearings, which can often be years away.
